A space-saving way to organize pipe nipple is to sort them by length (not diameter) and nest nipples inside each other.
For example, take all your 7" long nipples and put each size inside the next largest size. If the largest size you carry is 2", you'll only need space for a 7 inch long 2" nipple. It's also relatively easy to see your stock this way.
